Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of peace. I will give him rest from all his enemies all around; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days.
He shall build a house for my name; and he will be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.’
Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you and prosper you, and build the house of Yahweh your God, as he has spoken concerning you.
May Yahweh give you discretion and understanding, and put you in charge of Israel; that so you may keep the law of Yahweh your God.
Then you will prosper, if you observe to do the statutes and the ordinances which Yahweh gave Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed.

Explanation
In this verse, King David is speaking a blessing over his son Solomon, asking that God grant him wisdom and sound judgment as he prepares to take the throne over Israel. The heart of the request is not for wealth, military success, or personal comfort, but for discretion and understanding—qualities of mind and character that would equip Solomon to rule well. Notably, David ties this gift of wisdom directly to a purpose: so that Solomon might keep the law of Yahweh his God. Wisdom, in this verse, is not an end in itself but a means to faithful obedience.
The context is David's final preparations before his death. Having been told by God that he himself would not build the temple because he was a man of war and bloodshed, David instead devotes his remaining strength to organizing everything Solomon will need—materials, workers, and instructions—for both building the temple and ruling the nation. This chapter records David's charge to Solomon and his prayer over him. As an aging king passing the mantle to his son, David is doing what any faithful parent or leader would want to do: equip the next generation not just with resources, but with the right heart and mind to use those resources well. His words reflect deep paternal concern paired with theological conviction—he knows that Solomon's success as king will depend not on political skill alone but on covenant faithfulness to God's law.
Theologically, this verse highlights the biblical connection between wisdom and obedience. In the Hebrew Scriptures, true wisdom is never separated from the fear of the Lord and adherence to His commands (see Proverbs 9:10). David understood that
