Explanation

Paul writes here to the church in Corinth, a congregation he had founded but which had fallen into division, with different factions claiming loyalty to Paul, Apollos, or Cephas as though they were rival leaders. In the verses just before this one, Paul establishes that Jesus Christ himself is the only foundation that can be laid for the church, and that he and other ministers are simply builders working on top of that foundation. Verse 12 continues this building metaphor by naming six materials someone might use to build: gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or stubble. These represent the quality and durability of the work that ministers, teachers, and believers do in the life of the church, once Christ has been established as the foundation.

The contrast Paul draws is deliberate and stark. Gold, silver, and costly stones are valuable, enduring materials that can withstand fire and testing. Wood, hay, and stubble are cheap, flammable, and temporary. Paul is not suggesting that some people build on a different foundation than others; the foundation (Christ) is the same for everyone. Rather, he is talking about the quality of the ministry, teaching, and spiritual investment that is built upon that foundation. In the verses that follow (13-15), Paul explains that a "day" will reveal the quality of each person's work, testing it by fire — the gold, silver, and precious stones will survive, while the wood, hay, and stubble will be burned up, though the builder himself will still be saved, "y
