What does John 14:25 mean?
"I have said these things to you, while still living with you."
— John 14:25 (World English Bible)
Surrounding context
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?”
Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.
He who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words. The word which you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me.
I have said these things to you, while still living with you.
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
You heard how I told you, ‘I go away, and I come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I.
Explanation
John 14:25 comes near the end of what is often called the Farewell Discourse, the long teaching Jesus gives to his disciples in the Upper Room on the night before his crucifixion. In this simple, almost transitional statement, Jesus pauses to remind his disciples that everything he has just taught them—about not letting their hearts be troubled, about the Father's house, about being the way, the truth, and the life, about the Father and Son dwelling within believers—has been spoken during the time he was physically present with them. It is a marker verse, closing one section of thought and preparing for what comes next in verse 26, where he promises the coming of the Holy Spirit.
The context is crucial. Jesus knows his death is imminent, and his disciples are anxious and confused about what his departure will mean for them. Throughout John 13–17, Jesus is preparing them for a transition: from having him bodily present to teach and guide them, to a new kind of presence through the Holy Spirit after his resurrection and ascension. Verse 25 functions as a hinge point—Jesus draws attention to the mode of his teaching up to this moment ("while still living with you") precisely because he is about to explain that this mode is changing. The Spirit, he says next, will "teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you" (v. 26). So this small verse is not incidental; it sets up the contrast between Christ's earthly, in-person instruction and the ongoing instruction of the Spirit after his departure.
Theologically, this verse highlights the continuity between Jesus' earthly ministry
