Surrounding context
“But you shall not redeem the firstborn of a cow, or the firstborn of a sheep, or the firstborn of a goat. They are holy. You shall sprinkle their blood on the altar, and shall burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.
Their meat shall be yours, as the wave offering breast and as the right thigh, it shall be yours.
All the wave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer to Yahweh, I have given you, and your sons and your daughters with you, as a portion forever. It is a covenant of salt forever before Yahweh to you and to your offspring with you.”
Yahweh said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel.
“To the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the Tent of Meeting.
Henceforth the children of Israel shall not come near the Tent of Meeting, lest they bear sin, and die.
But the Levites shall do the service of the Tent of Meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. Among the children of Israel, they shall have no inheritance.
Explanation
Numbers 18:20 records God speaking directly to Aaron, the high priest, telling him that unlike the other tribes of Israel, he and his descendants would receive no allotment of land in Canaan. When the Promised Land was divided among the twelve tribes, the tribe of Levi (to which Aaron and the priesthood belonged) was set apart from that process entirely. Instead of fields, vineyards, or territory to call their own, God declares that he himself would be Aaron's "portion and inheritance."
The context here is crucial. Numbers 18 comes right after the rebellion of Korah in chapter 16, where Korah and his followers challenged Aaron's priestly authority and were judged by God. In the aftermath, chapter 18 clarifies and reaffirms the unique role and provision for the priests and Levites. God lays out that the priests would be supported through the offerings, tithes, and portions of sacrifices brought by the rest of Israel, rather than through farming their own land like other tribes. This arrangement kept the priests dependent on God's provision through the community's worship, rather than on their own agricultural labor or property.
Theologically, this verse expresses a profound truth: nearness to God and service to him is itself the greatest inheritance a person can have. Aaron's lack of physical land was not a deprivation but an elevation — he was set apart for such intimate service to God that God himself became his sustence, identity, and reward. This idea echoes throughout Scripture, particularly in the Psalms, where the language of God as one's "portion" reappears
