What does Numbers 26:64 mean?
"But among these there was not a man of them who were counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai."
— Numbers 26:64 (World English Bible)
Surrounding context
Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before Yahweh.
Those who were counted of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward; for they were not counted among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
These are those who were counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
But among these there was not a man of them who were counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.
For Yahweh had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” There was not a man left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
Explanation
Numbers 26:64 comes at the close of the second census recorded in the book of Numbers. In plain language, the verse simply states a striking fact: among all the men just counted for this new census, not one of them had been part of the earlier census taken by Moses and Aaron back at Mount Sinai, near the beginning of Israel's journey out of Egypt. An entire generation of men had passed away, and a new generation now stood in their place.
To understand the context, we need to recall the two censuses in Numbers. The first census, in Numbers chapter 1, was taken at Sinai shortly after the Exodus, numbering the men of fighting age who would eventually enter the Promised Land. But that generation, because of their unbelief and rebellion at Kadesh Barnea (recorded in Numbers 13-14), was condemned to wander in the wilderness for forty years and die there without entering Canaan, except for Joshua and Caleb. Numbers 26 records the second census, taken near the end of the forty years, on the plains of Moab, just before Israel finally entered the land. Moses and Aaron the priest had overseen the first count; but by this second count, Aaron had already died (Numbers 20:28), and Moses himself would soon die before the crossing into Canaan. The verse underscores that the entire adult generation counted at Sinai—apart from Joshua and Caleb—had died in the wilderness, exactly as God had declared in Numbers 14:29-30.
Theologically, this verse is a sobering testimony to the seriousness of God's judgment on unb
