and you shall give the money, with which their remainder is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons.”
Moses took the redemption money from those who exceeded the number of those who were redeemed by the Levites;
from the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, one thousand three hundred sixty-five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:
and Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons, according to Yahweh’s word, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
Explanation
Numbers 3:51 records a simple administrative action: Moses collected redemption money and handed it over to Aaron and his sons, doing exactly what God had instructed him to do. On the surface it reads almost like a receipt, but it closes out an important episode in Israel's early wilderness organization, and its plainness is part of its point.
To understand the context, back up a few verses. God had set apart the tribe of Levi to serve in place of the firstborn sons of Israel, who technically belonged to Him because He had spared them in Egypt (Exodus 13:2, 12-15). When the Levites were counted, they numbered 22,000, while the firstborn Israelites numbered 22,273 — 273 more than the Levites available to substitute for them. Since the number didn't match evenly, God commanded that those 273 "extra" firstborn be redeemed with money instead, at five shekels each (Numbers 3:44-48). Moses collected this silver from the people and, as verse 51 tells us, gave it to Aaron and his sons, the priests, since it belonged to the sanctuary and its service. Moses wrote this account, most likely during Israel's time at Mount Sinai and the early wilderness journey, addressing the community of Israel as they organized their camp, their worship, and their priesthood under God's direct instruction.
Theologically, this verse emphasizes obedience and order. Three times in quick succession the text stresses that this was done "according to Yahweh's word," "as Yahweh commanded" — a deliberate repetition found throughout Numbers
