An Evening Prayer for Rest and Reflection

Evening prayer has been part of Christian practice since the early church — a bookend to morning prayer, a way of releasing the day before sleep. This prayer is for the end of the day: not necessarily a perfect day, just the actual one.

Prayer

Lord, the day is ending.

I come to the end of it with a mixture of things: some of it went well, some of it didn't. Some of what I hoped to do is done. Some of it isn't.

Thank you for what was good in this day — I want to notice it before I sleep.

Forgive me for where I fell short. The things said that shouldn't have been, the things left unsaid that should have been. The impatience, the distraction, the self-centeredness. I'm not carrying that into tomorrow.

I leave what I couldn't finish in your hands. It will still be there in the morning, and so will you. That's enough.

Grant me sleep — real rest, not just hours of lying still. And let me wake with some measure of hope.

Be near through the night.

Amen.

This prayer follows the ancient structure of Compline — the final prayer of the day in monastic tradition — adapted for ordinary use. It moves through thanksgiving, confession, release, and a request for rest. The goal is to end the day without carrying its weight into sleep.
