A Prayer for Marriage
Scripture uses marriage as an image for God's relationship with his people — and treats it as a covenant, not a contract. Ephesians 5 and 1 Corinthians 13 both speak to what marriage is called to look like. This prayer draws on that vision.
Prayer
Lord,
I bring our marriage to you.
You designed it. You sustain it. You are its foundation — or you are meant to be. Help us to build on you and not on each other's performance.
In the places where we are struggling — the distance, the repeated argument, the unspoken thing — show us what is underneath it. Help us to see each other with grace, to assume the best before we assume the worst.
Give us patience for the places we are not the same. Give us courage to say hard things with kindness. Give us the habit of turning toward each other rather than away.
May we pursue each other the way you pursue your church — not because it is easy or convenient, but because of a love that is decided, not just felt.
We need help beyond what we can provide for ourselves. That is why we are asking.
Bless our marriage, Lord. Make it good — and let that goodness reflect something of you.
Amen.
Draws from Ephesians 5:25-33, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, and Ecclesiastes 4:12. This prayer works equally for a marriage in a good season (praying for sustained health) and a difficult one (asking for repair).
