A Prayer for Protection

Prayers for protection appear throughout Scripture — the Psalms are full of them, the Lord's Prayer includes "deliver us from evil," and Paul's description of the armor of God is itself a form of this prayer. This one draws on those sources for moments when you genuinely need covering.

Prayer

Lord, I ask for your protection.

Over my life, my family, those I am responsible for and those I love. Over what is mine to guard and what is not mine to control.

I know I am not promised safety from all difficulty. But I am told that you are a shield, a fortress, a refuge — and I am asking you to be those things now.

Protect me from what would harm me — the seen and the unseen. From threats that are physical and from threats that are spiritual, which sometimes do more damage than the ones I can see.

Guard my mind. Guard the people under my care. Guard what is vulnerable.

And where protection means something different than I expect — where you carry me through something rather than around it — give me the grace to trust you in that too.

You are my refuge and my fortress. I make that confession, and I ask for its reality.

Amen.

This prayer deliberately includes "the seen and the unseen" — both physical and spiritual threats. Ephesians 6 takes spiritual opposition seriously, and any prayer for protection that ignores that dimension is incomplete. The final request — for grace when protection looks different than expected — keeps the prayer honest about how God's protection sometimes works.
