A Prayer of Thanksgiving

Gratitude in the Bible is less about feeling thankful and more about choosing to notice. The practice of thanksgiving — stopping to name what has been given — reshapes the way we see everything else. This prayer is an exercise in that noticing.

Prayer

Lord, I want to practice gratitude — not just feel it when things are going well, but practice it.

So I'm stopping. Deliberately, for a moment, to notice.

Thank you for today — for breath and food and shelter, for things so ordinary they almost don't register. Most of what I have goes unnoticed, most of the time. I'm noticing it now.

Thank you for the people who carry me — the ones who show up, who are honest, who stay. Name them here.

Thank you for what I can do, and for the work in front of me. Not every part of it is easy, but it is mine to do.

And in the things that are hard — the things I would not have chosen — thank you even there. Not for the pain itself, but for the fact that you are still present in it, and that none of it is wasted.

Let gratitude become the lens through which I see the rest of this day.

Amen.

This prayer is based on 1 Thessalonians 5:18 — "give thanks in all circumstances." The word "in" is doing significant work: not "for" all circumstances, but "in" them. This prayer models that distinction, giving thanks within difficulty rather than pretending it isn't there.
