A Prayer for Greater Faith
The most honest prayer in the New Testament may be the one a desperate father says to Jesus: "I believe; help my unbelief." It holds faith and doubt at the same time without collapsing either. This prayer follows that model — bringing what you have, honestly, and asking for more.
Prayer
Lord, I believe. And I also struggle to believe.
I'm not going to pretend otherwise. There are days when faith comes easily and the things I say I believe feel solid and real. And there are days when they feel distant, abstract, hard to hold onto.
Today is one of those days. Or this season is one of those seasons.
I'm doing what that father did who came to you with his sick son — telling you what I have and what I lack, in the same breath. I believe. Help my unbelief.
I'm not asking you to manufacture certainty I don't have. I'm asking for the real thing — faith that grows, not faith that's faked. Faith that's been tested and held, not just performed.
Where my faith is weak because of things I've been through, meet me there. Where it's weak because I haven't been paying attention, wake me up.
Let me know you better. That seems to be where faith actually comes from — not from trying harder to believe, but from encountering you more honestly.
Amen.
This prayer is modelled on Mark 9:24 — the father who says "I believe; help my unbelief." That prayer is significant precisely because it holds both faith and doubt without resolving either one into the other. The final paragraph reflects Paul's insight in Romans 10:17: "faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ" — faith grows through encounter, not willpower.

Scripture behind this prayer
Mark 9:24
"Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”"
I believe; help my unbelief — the model prayer this is built on.
Hebrews 11:1
"Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen."
Faith is confidence in what we hope for — the definition.
Romans 10:17
"So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
Faith comes from hearing — the source and the mechanism.
Matthew 17:20
"He said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."
Faith like a mustard seed — size is not the point.
Hebrews 12:2
"looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
Fix your eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
