A Prayer for Peace

The peace the Bible talks about is not the same as everything going well. Jesus promised peace in the same breath as telling his disciples they would have trouble. This prayer is for the kind of peace that holds in difficulty — not cheap comfort, but something more durable.

Prayer

Lord, I am asking for peace.

Not the kind that depends on things going well — I've noticed that kind doesn't last. I'm asking for the kind you promised: the peace that passes understanding, that guards the heart and mind even when circumstances haven't changed.

I bring you the thing that is disturbing my peace right now — the situation, the person, the uncertainty, the fear. I'm naming it rather than pretending it isn't there.

I don't know how to stop being unsettled by it on my own. So I'm asking you to do what I can't: quiet something deeper than my surface thoughts.

Help me to receive what you've already given. You said you left peace with me. Help me find it again.

And where peace requires action from me — a conversation, a decision, something I've been avoiding — give me the courage to take the step.

Let the peace of Christ rule in my heart today.

Amen.

This prayer engages honestly with the gap between "peace has been promised" and "I don't feel peaceful." It asks not for circumstances to change but for something to happen at a deeper level — and acknowledges that peace sometimes requires something from us too.
