A Prayer for a Prodigal Child

There is a particular grief that belongs to parents of children who have walked away — from faith, from family, from the life you hoped for them. This prayer is for those parents: the ones who are still waiting at the window, still hoping, still praying the same prayer they've prayed a hundred times before.

Prayer

Lord, you know my child's name.

You know where they are right now — the places I'm not allowed to ask about, the choices I can't watch them make. You know who they're with and what they're running from. You know what I don't.

And still you love them more than I do. That is the thing I have to keep coming back to. Your love is not exhausted by their choices. It doesn't run out. It goes further than I can go.

Bring them home. Not just to me — bring them home to themselves. Remind them of who they are. Plant a longing in them that the far country can't satisfy. Let something turn their eyes back toward you.

Give me grace for the waiting. Keep me from bitterness. Keep my heart ready to run toward them when they turn — not to lecture, not to say I told you so, but to hold them. Like you have held me.

I trust you with this child. I have to. There is nowhere else to put this kind of love.

Amen.
