A Prayer for Your Nation and Its Leaders

The Bible repeatedly calls God's people to pray for governing authorities and the wellbeing of the nations they inhabit. This prayer is for those who want to intercede for their country — not as a political act, but as a spiritual one — especially in seasons of tension, division, or uncertainty.

Prayer

Lord, I bring my nation before you.

I don't know how to fix what's broken here. The division feels too deep, the problems too complex, the leaders too imperfect. But I know you are not surprised by any of it. You have governed nations. You have turned the hearts of kings. You are not helpless before the news.

Give wisdom to those who lead. Whatever their party, whatever I think of their choices — give them wisdom beyond their own, a desire to do right, a fear of you that protects them from the worst of what power can do to a person.

Protect the vulnerable. Defend those who have no one to speak for them. Let justice roll. Let your mercy be seen in how we treat the least.

Knit back what is torn in our common life. Remind us what we share. Quiet the voices that profit from anger. Raise up leaders, at every level, who will walk in integrity.

I confess that I have been part of the problem — in what I've said, in what I've assumed, in how quickly I've written off those who see things differently. Forgive me. Help me to be part of the solution.

This is your world. These are your people. Have mercy.

Amen.

Grounded in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 and 2 Chronicles 7:14, this prayer is deliberately non-partisan — it prays for leaders across the political spectrum and confesses the Christian's own complicity in division.
