A Prayer for Guidance and Direction

Some prayers for guidance are really just asking God to confirm a decision already made. This one is not that. It's written for the moments of genuine uncertainty — when you actually don't know what to do, and you're asking someone who does.

Prayer

Lord, I genuinely don't know what to do.

I've thought about it. I've asked people I trust. I've weighed what I can see. And I still can't see clearly what the right path is from here.

So I'm asking you — who see the end from the beginning, who promise to guide those who trust you, who said to acknowledge you in all things and you would make the paths straight.

I'm acknowledging you now. I'm not trying to make this work on my own.

Show me. Not necessarily through a dramatic sign — through wisdom that comes, through a door that opens or closes, through the counsel of people around me, through the slow settling of conviction. However you choose.

In the meantime, help me trust that you're guiding even when I can't feel the guiding. That you go before me. That you're not indifferent to how this turns out.

And help me hold the outcome loosely enough that I can actually follow wherever you lead.

Amen.

This prayer addresses one of the most common situations people bring to prayer — genuine uncertainty about a decision. It asks for guidance without specifying the mechanism, which is honest; Scripture describes guidance coming in many ways. The final line — holding the outcome loosely — is often the harder ask, and worth naming.
