A Prayer for a Struggling Relationship

The Bible takes relationships seriously enough to address conflict directly and repeatedly. This prayer is for the moments in a relationship when things are genuinely hard — not asking for easy resolution, but for the grace to love well in a difficult place.

Prayer

Lord, this relationship is hard right now.

I'm bringing it to you because I don't have enough of what's needed on my own. I need more patience than I have, more grace than comes naturally, more willingness to see the other person clearly than I can manage when I'm hurt or frustrated.

I ask for this relationship to be healed and restored. But even more than that, I ask for the capacity to do my part.

Let me hear better than I usually do. Let me speak with less defensiveness, more honesty, more care for how my words land. Let me be willing to be wrong — not just to say it, but to actually reconsider.

Where I have contributed to what's broken here, show me. I don't want to approach this as if the problem is entirely elsewhere.

Give us what we need to get through this and come out the other side closer than we were. Not just resolved — genuinely closer.

And if there are things that need to be said, give me the courage and the kindness to say them at the right moment, in the right way.

Amen.

This prayer deliberately includes asking to see the person's own contribution to the conflict — which is the harder and more important ask. Many prayers for difficult relationships focus entirely on the other person changing. This one names the need for honest self-examination first, following Matthew 7:5's order.
