A Prayer for a Friend in Need

Praying for someone else is one of the most practical expressions of love in the Bible. But it can be hard to know what to actually ask when someone you care about is going through something you can't fix. This prayer takes that honestly and asks for what most needs to be asked.

Prayer

Lord, I bring [my friend] to you.

Not because I've figured out what they need — I haven't, not entirely. You know them better than I do, and you know what this situation actually requires. I'm asking on their behalf because I love them and because I don't know what else to do.

Give them what they need today. Not what would make things easier — though that too, if you will — but what they actually need. Strength if they're depleted. Peace if they're anxious. Clarity if they're confused. Presence if they're alone.

Let them know they are not forgotten by you. Let that be real to them in some way today.

Where I can be part of what they need — show me that too. Not what I'd like to offer, but what would actually help. And give me the courage to actually show up in whatever way that is.

I trust you with them. I don't always know what that means, but I mean it.

Amen.

This prayer contains a deliberate blank — the bracket invites the person praying to fill in their friend's name, making the intercession personal and specific. The line "not what would make things easier — though that too, if you will" is honest about the tension between asking for circumstantial relief and asking for what is genuinely needed. The Romans 8:26-27 anchor acknowledges that we often don't know quite what to ask.
