A Prayer for a Broken Heart

Heartbreak is one of the most disorienting experiences a person can go through — the loss of someone you loved, the collapse of something you hoped in, the strange grief of an ending. This prayer is for those in the middle of that pain: not to make it smaller, but to bring it honestly before the God who draws near to the brokenhearted.

Prayer

Lord, my heart is broken.

I don't fully understand it yet. The loss is still too fresh, the edges still too sharp. I just know it hurts in a way that's hard to put into words, and I don't know how long it will hurt like this.

You said you are close to the brokenhearted. I need that to be true right now. Come close. Sit with me in this. I don't need answers yet — I just need to not be alone in it.

Help me not to harden. This kind of pain can make a person guarded, cynical, done with love. Protect me from that. Protect my capacity to hope, to trust, to try again eventually.

Heal what is broken in me — not just the surface wound, but the deeper questions it raised about who I am and whether I am lovable. Remind me what you said about me. Let your love be the foundation when human love has let me down.

Grieve with me. Then, in your time, carry me through.

Amen.

Anchored in Psalm 34:18 and Isaiah 61:1, this prayer doesn't rush past the pain. It asks for presence before resolution, and protection of the heart's future capacity for love.
