A Prayer for Forgiveness

The Bible's prayers for forgiveness don't minimize what happened — they name it. Psalm 51 is the longest prayer of confession in Scripture and it doesn't try to make what David did look less serious than it was. This prayer follows that approach: honesty first, then the mercy that meets it.

Prayer

Lord, I come to you honestly — not with excuses, not with a minimized version of what I did.

I got it wrong. I know what I should have done and didn't. I know what I said, or did, or failed to do. And I can't undo it.

I'm not asking you to pretend it didn't happen. I'm asking for your mercy, which is something else entirely.

You said that if I confess, you are faithful and just to forgive. I'm holding you to that — not because I deserve it, but because you said it, and I need it.

Forgive me. Clean up what I've made a mess of. Where I've hurt someone, give me the courage and the humility to make it right with them too.

And let this not just be a reset. Let it be a beginning of something — let me be different on the other side of this, not just relieved.

Thank you for mercy that isn't contingent on me being better first.

Amen.

This prayer follows the pattern of honest confession before mercy — naming the failure without dressing it up. It incorporates 1 John 1:9's direct promise about confession, and ends with a forward-looking request: not just forgiveness but transformation. That distinction matters — forgiveness clears the record; transformation changes the pattern.
